The Friary School’s 2026 Sports Day delivered everything the PE department hoped for with a fierce competition, outstanding individual performances, vibrant house spirit, and a whole-school atmosphere that made the day unforgettable.
Seward House arrived with high hopes of retaining their Sports Cup, following last year’s victory, and they certainly put on a show. Their energy was matched by the enthusiasm of the new Year 7s, who took part for the first time and embraced the day with impressive confidence.
Form tutors and students across all houses went above and beyond in decorating their zones. From imaginative posters to colourful banners, the creativity on display added a brilliant visual flair to the field and set the tone for a day of friendly rivalry and celebration.
The tug of war once again proved to be one of the most anticipated events of the day, delivering gripping finals across the year groups:
- Year 7: Garrick
- Year 8: Johnson
- Year 9: Seward
- Year 10: Seward
The cheers echoed across the field as each house dug deep, showing determination and teamwork in every pull.
The morning saw students competing in a wide range of field events, from traditional athletics to fun favourites.
Long Jump Highlights
- Freya D (Y7) jumped an impressive 4.05m, beating the boys’ distance and earning well-deserved applause.
Shot Put & Discus
- Atticus H (Y7) achieved 8.4m in the shot put.
- Arabella G (Y8) threw 15.4m in the discus, matching the boys’ winner George W. These performances showcased exceptional strength and technique from both year groups.
Javelin Results
Winners across the year groups were:
- Year 7: Aurelia, Ezra
- Year 8: Isabelle, Taylor
- Year 9: Mia, Oli
- Year 10: Natalia, Oli (with a standout throw of 27.4m)
Sack Race – A Classic Favourite
Darwin House dominated the sack race across most year groups, bouncing their way to victory with infectious enthusiasm and plenty of laughter.
The staff tug of war remains one of the most beloved events of Sports Day. The big question this year: Could Mr Perry retain the title for his house?
The final standings were:

In the afternoon, the entire school gathered for the excitement of the running events and relays. The atmosphere was electric as students sprinted down the track with passion and focus.

As we look ahead to 2027, one question lingers: Will Seward house secure a hat trick with a third consecutive win, or will another House rise to challenge them?
Whatever the outcome, the excitement is already building.
Thanks must go to Mr Foster, who marked his final Sports Day at Friary with outstanding organisation and a brilliantly run competition following his internal promotion. His commitment and leadership have shaped Sports Day into the highlight it is today. As we look ahead, Sports Day 2027 will be in the capable hands of Ms Fallows, the new Head of Department, who is sure to continue the tradition with energy and excellence.
