The Year 8 Friary team delivered an outstanding performance to secure the Cannock and District Cup title in a dramatic encounter against a strong Cheslyn Hay side.
Friary made a lightning start, taking the lead within the opening five minutes. A pinpoint cross from Freddie M found Isaac A, who calmly finished into the corner to give Friary an early advantage. Cheslyn Hay responded well, however, and capitalised on their pace in attack to turn the game around and lead 2–1.
As the first half progressed, Friary began to assert control in midfield, with Logan E and Harley G dictating play and keeping the ball moving. Their efforts paid off when the ball was worked out wide to Freddie M, who fired a superb strike across the goalkeeper into the top corner to level the score.
Both sides then converted penalties before the break—Harley G stepping up confidently for Friary—sending the teams into half-time locked at 3–3.
The second half proved just as competitive, with neither side allowing time or space on the ball. Cheslyn Hay regained the lead with a stunning long-range effort that flew past debut goalkeeper Jack R, who otherwise produced an excellent performance.
With just 15 minutes remaining, Friary equalised once more. Great build-up play involving L Graham and Freddie M led to Theo R finishing from close range at the back post, setting up a tense finale.
As the clock ticked down, Friary found a moment of magic. Tireless work from Blake W won possession, allowing Max S to drive forward into space. With composure beyond his years, he opened up his body and curled a sensational left-footed strike into the top corner, sparking wild celebrations and sealing a memorable victory.
As he is taking up a new role in school, Mr Foster saw the team claim the final competition win of his tenure at Head of PE.
Mr Foster said: “The win secures the year 8 boys their first Cannock and District Cup title—an incredible achievement for the team. Congratulations to all involved, and we look forward to seeing the boys defend their title next season.”
