Last night saw a well-attended Post-18 Pathways Evening for students in Year 12 and their parents.
The event started in the theatre with detailed overview by Assistant Headteacher, Mrs Barratt, of students’ choices at Post-18.
There are, broadly, five main routes which students can take after leaving Sixth Form. They are: Higher Education; a Gap year; an Apprenticeship; employment; or a third year of full-time Further Education.
There followed a series of breakout sessions to help students and parents weigh up their options.
The school was very honoured to be visited again by Jeff Chilton, who leads on student recruitment across the Midlands for Aberystwyth University. Jeff’s presentation was about student finance.
Mrs Garner-Thorpe, Head of Sixth Form, spoke about the UCAS Applications process, whilst Mrs Barratt, as the school’s certified Careers Leader, gave a presentation on Higher Degree Level Apprenticeships. Mrs Bullock, our Careers and Aspirations Mentor, was also on hand.
Mark Drury, Headteacher, said: “Students leaving education are facing more competition to get that first good job on the career ladder. We try keep our families well informed on their children’s choices and give them realistic advice on how to get there. Whilst destinations data suggests the school has been pretty successful at this in recent years, no-one can rest on their laurels in what is certainly a more challenging environment.”
Mrs Barratt added: “It was great to see so many of our parents there and we hope they found it useful.”
Mrs Barratt has e-mailed attendees with a comprehensive series of links to the organisations and key providers who were referenced last night by the various speakers.
