Our Year 9 debate teams went head-to-head this week to debate the motion that ‘It is impossible to be a wealthy country if you care about environmental protection.’  This was part of our Go Green focus week.

All teams were well-prepared, having done lots of independent research, including graphs and statistics to back up the points they made. Students were able to counter-argue and often spoke, in fact, without relying on their notes to help them.

Although all teams put up a good fight, the overall winning team from Seward was Annabelle H, Zara T, Evie T and Elliott T. Garrick came in second place with their team of Amelia W, Isla B, Gracie J and Alan R. The team from Darwin (Louis M, Zach R, Mia S and Boh C) came third and the team from Johnson (Keeley S, Maddie C, Tara W and Rocio I) came fourth.

Our judges (including school governor Nina Worrall) voted Annabelle H (Seward) and Isla B (Garrick) as the most valuable debaters.

School librarian and debate judge, Helena Cresswell, said: “The students had done a lot of research and made a lot of valuable points. They were able to cite real-world examples using countries like the UK and Luxembourg to support their arguments. Well done to all.”
