Year 10 Health and Social Care students helped residents celebrate an early Pancake Day at a local care home.
The Friary students visited The Spires care home after school this week, since Pancake Day falls in half-term. Pupils helped residents take part a range of activities, including pancake decorating – with sweets, laces and sauces to help design faces. A picture shows the winning design, as chosen by staff at The Spires.
Pupils also helped run a pancake memory game, with residents having a time period to look and remember a list of 12 pancake-related items. (Butter, flour, eggs and sugar were a few examples). Student divided into two teams to help the residents write down and remember the list. Both teams recalled all 12 items, with the girl’s team being slightly faster.
The girls also took the win for the pancake flip, with Friary pupils taking turns flipping a pancake as many times they could before it dropped or broke. Fern won, with an impressive 11 flips, flowed by Isla with 9 and then Harry with 7.
Teacher Mrs Simkiss said: “The pupils were great speaking to the residents and got an insight into the work involved in a care home.” Miss Simkiss added that The Friary has long-standing links with The Spires, and the school are grateful for having experiences for students like this available in the local community.
