The Friary U16 boys headed into the Staffordshire Schools Hockey Championships with determination, confidence, and the benefit of several focused training sessions behind them. They knew the competition would be fierce, but there was a genuine belief that on their day, they had the quality to finish inside the top three.
Their first match against Newcastle proved to be a difficult start. A 4–0 loss reflected a team that simply wasn’t playing to its potential. Energy levels were low, connections on the pitch were missing, and the boys struggled to find their rhythm. It wasn’t the performance they had trained for, and they knew it.
Coach Kim Fallows delivered a much‑needed team talk, urging the players to reset, refocus, and show the hockey they were capable of.
The response came quickly. In their second match, against Abbotsholme, the Friary boys looked far more cohesive. Passes connected, movement improved, and the team began to resemble the unit seen in training. However, Abbotsholme fielded an upcoming England player who was simply unstoppable, and despite Friary’s improved structure, they couldn’t prevent him from dominating the game. Still, spirits remained high. The boys knew Abbotsholme were favourites to take home the trophy, so the question became: What can we still bring to this competition?
The answer came in the next match. Friary held Queen Mary’s Grammar School to a tight 1–0 scoreline in what became one of the most intense battles of the day. Midfield duels were relentless, and the defensive trio of Henri Gathergood, Nate Kirkwood, and Francis Shaw, who had bravely returned after taking a ball to the body in the previous game, were outstanding.
Goalkeeper Noah Bowers produced one of the moments of the tournament with a spectacular diving, mid‑air save that drew gasps from the sideline. Meanwhile, Anand Sihota began to find his stride, playing with confidence and creativity.
This performance lit a spark. The boys finally looked like the team they had been in training, united, hungry, and ready to fight for every ball.
