Last week, our Year 10 Debate Competition focused on the motion: ‘Britain’s mental health crisis amongst young people is due to a lack of resilience.’ The debate formed part of our Blue Monday focus week.
The students threw themselves into their debates, with a range of different points and good counterarguments. Some teams found it easier to argue one side rather than the other, but all teams came up with good ideas supported by independent research.
The overall winning team from Seward was Daniel Jones, Jack Battams, Leo Cooke and Sam Derrick. In a close second place was the Darwin team (Adam Perkins, Danielle Abbott, Luke Perkins and William Smith). Johnson House came third place with their team (Lily Burnell, Maisie Bugg, Phoebe Harris and Evie Fudger) and Garrick came fourth this time (their team being Frankie Carless, Sean Curtis, Jack Wilkes and Jensen Wood).
The competition was judged by School Librarian, Helena Cresswell and guest judge (School Governor) Mona Sihota.
The Most Valuable Debaters chosen by the guest judge were Maisie Bugg (Johnson) and Jack Battams (Seward).
Assistant Headteacher, Sam Sullivan, said: “There was some great preparation research conducted in advance of the debates, and the teams argued with confidence and conviction. Well done to all.”
