This week’s Focus Week is Remembrance, with students learning about sacrifices made by those who have died whilst fighting for their country. Some of our Year 7 Eco Reps visited the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas to lay a wreath as part of The Friary’s Remembrance. Erin Connolly (7D2), Rhien Campbell Innes (7D2), Charlie Strachan (7G2), Sophie Scott (7G1), Finlay Plastow (7J1), Sophie Wright (7J2), Owain Parry (7J2), Sophia Beardsmore (7S1), Isla Stubbs (7S2) and Zayne Liddle (7S2) represented their tutor groups and the school, whilst also learning about some of the different memorials at the site.

As part of our Eco theme, the Focus Week has concentrated on the environmental impact of war and, in tutor activities and assemblies, students have learnt about the devastating environmental impacts of conflict in France, Japan, Afghanistan, Kuwait and Gaza: “The environment is always a casualty of war. Always. When the guns fall silent, people are left to shoulder the burden of a toxic legacy for generations.” Inger Andersen, UNEP Executive Director.

Sam Sullivan, Assistant Headteacher, said: “The students were eager to learn about the devastating impact of war on the environment, whilst also appreciating the tranquil beauty of the National Memorial Arboretum. They were excellent ambassadors for the school during the visit.”
