This week saw the launch of our Focus Week theme for the year: Protecting the Environment. This year, students will be participating in Focus Weeks such as: Second Hand September, Recycling at Christmas, Go Green Week and Endangered Species Week, among others.

Our focus this week was World Cleanup Day and to support this our Year 8 Eco Reps undertook a morning of litter picking in Lichfield centre, accompanied by members of the local group Lichfield Litter Legends, led by Bob Harris.

In a little over an hour, 15 of our Year 8s collected a huge number of bottles, cans, papers, wrappers and cigarette butts from the B&M carpark, around Stowe Pool and play area, and in the town centre.

The students’ enthusiasm and passion for looking after their environment was inspiring, and they will be sharing this with their peers through tutor activities and assemblies in school. They included Lucy O’Connell and Alex Price (8D1), Jacob Yeomans and Ava Clarke (8D2), George Walker and Megan Breese (8J1), Larry Evans (8J2), Natalie Walker and Freddy Shoesmith (8G1), Jamie Madge and Katie Leonard (8G2), Toby Leach and Lillia Wild (8S1) and Harry Treacey and Ben Hollywood (8S2).

The students were generously awarded for their efforts with free toffee apples from one of the market traders.

Other activities this week have included a huge plastic bottle collection competition, which has seen Houses compete to collect the most plastic bottles for recycling.

Sam Sullivan, Assistant Headteacher, said: “The students embraced the challenge of collecting as much litter as possible, including behind bin areas and under hedges, as well as the more obvious deposits. It was heartening to see that they clearly feel very passionate about this issue.”
