As a school we place an emphasis on House Competitions and our debating competition, which sees all Year groups take part through the year, and readies students for their Sixth Form involvement in regional debating competitions.
Indeed, it was honing their skills in the House battles, that helped our Sixth Form team win the regional competition this year against a string of rival secondary schools, and before our current and former MPs, as well as other local dignitaries.
This year’s battle saw Darwin House crowned champions – sneaking above Johnson House by just 8 points:
Darwin – 454
Johnson – 446
Seward – 407
Garrick – 376
In fact, Sam Sullivan, Assistant Headteacher, said: “We set challenging debate topics and demand a high standards from our students but they certainly deliver. The debates are played out in front of school staff and governors, rely on detailed preparation and verbal dexterity, and there is the added pressure of representing the House. Huge congratulations to Darwin House – a very successful year – and we’ll go again in September.”
