Our Year 8 House Debate Competition took place this week, with teams debating this issue: ‘The NHS offers too much and should be scaled back’ as part of the focus week on World Health Day. The debate was judged by school librarian, Helena Cresswell, and school governors, Natasha Johnson and Greg Sugden.
Seward took on Johnson for the first round. Both teams were very well prepared and debated their points fiercely, firing arguments and counter-arguments with the speed and urgency of an emergency surgical team. Darwin and Garrick followed up on Wednesday, with very well-researched points supported by statistical evidence.
The overall winners were the team from Darwin House: Louis Martin, Sophie Antcliffe, Boh Carr and Mia Smith. They were closely followed by Seward, with Garrick and Johnson taking third and fourth places.
The judges chose Annabelle Hill and Louis Martin as the Most Valuable Debaters.
Helena Cresswell, School Librarian, said: “We were all very impressed by the passion shown by the teams as they debated their points. This issue is one which clearly means a lot to our students and their research showed careful thought and a wide range of ideas.”
