Year 12 Biologists and Geographers made their way to a Field Studies Council centre based near Betws-y-Coed in Wales to undertake practical work essential to their A-Level courses.

We all spent one full day on Anglesey at Aberffraw, studying and sampling the sand dunes and identifying the succession of plant species as we got further away from the sea.

On the last day, we split into 2 groups, with the biologists heading to the river to learn some new sampling techniques to investigate the freshwater invertebrates that could inhabit fast flowing versus slow moving areas of the river. This involved lots of slippery rocks and wellies and a real adventure.

Meanwhile, the geographers paid a visit to the town of Betws-y-Coed to complete some surveying of the town, its inhabitants and the effects of tourism.

Andrea-Garner Thorpe, trip organiser, said: “The students were a credit to the school and had a fantastic time. They covered the key requirements for their practical’s tasks, but also bonded well as a group and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.”
