Within the last few weeks, there has been a huge amount of publicity around the online safety of children. This has primarily been as a result of the recent ‘Netflix’ series ‘Adolescence’ which tells the story of a young boy who is accused of committing a crime as a result of being influenced online. In addition to this, the CEO of ‘Roblox’ has been quoted as saying it is the responsibility of parents to keep their children safe online.
In school, we provide a lot of education to our students on the risks they will come across online and give them advice and support so that they can try and keep themselves safe online. As a parent it is often difficult to keep up to date with new social media trends and to know what to look out for online that could be problematic for your child’s safety. With this in mind, we would like to share a resource from the Sandwell PREVENT Team that provides information on what to look out for online and to be able to understand how children can be easily groomed and influenced online. It also provides helpful tips on how you can be proactive in helping to keep your child safe.
Lottie Hearn, Deputy Headteacher & Designaetd Safeguarding Lead, said: “If you are ever in need of any guidance or are worried about your child’s online safety, our safeguarding team is always available to offer advice and support. We also publish a list of helpful external agencies in your child’s planner. If your child or another person is in immediate danger or if you think a crime has been committed, you should always contact the police.”
