Our year 11 Health and Social Care students met with a representative from Dementia Friends in school as part of our celebration of World Carers Action Day.

The Dementia Friends team delivered an informative session to students and were resoundingly positive about young people learn about dementia at this early stage: “‘It was an absolute pleasure to meet you and your Health & Social Care pupils -they’re a credit to you and the school.”

The session explained the different types of dementia or Alzheimer’s in simple and friendly terms, where students could understand references and appreciated stories and experiences.

The students were asked to make a pledge at the end of the session to become a dementia friend and were awarded a badge.

The students enjoyed the session and were understanding and empathetic to the information and condition.

Matt Allman, Headteacher, said: “We are talking to our students about their peers who are carers at home, but also how carers will be needed in adult life, either to support family members or oneself. Equally, dementia is a condition that affects so many families and those suffering need to be treated with understand and respect. Dementia Friends were fantastic to come in and the students got a great deal from the session.”
