As part of our Focus Week programme we celebrated International Migrants Day which is a United Nations inspired celebration which takes place annually on 18 December.
International Migrants Day gives us a special opportunity to shine a spotlight on the invaluable contributions of millions of migrants around the world. It’s also a day for us to highlight the increasingly complex environment in which migration occurs. Conflicts, climate-related disasters and economic pressures continue to drive millions of people from their homes in search of safety or simply opportunity.
The week included assemblies which directly challenged the rioting which took place last Summer regrating migrants following fake news stories sent around on social media after the horrific murders in Southport. The arguments for and against migration were explored and the wider context and rationale for migration was detailed.
Student also explored a wider range of scenarios in tutor times to develop their understaffing of different types of migrants and related issues such as the NHS, overseas wars and orphans were contextualised.
Each tutor group also took part in a ‘Who Am I ?’ quiz competition where famous Britons whose origins are from migrant families were identified. This was won by 8D2 – drawn out of many correct entries -and they won a festive treat.
Matt Allman, Headteacher, said: “Any educationalists would have bene shocked by last summer’s riots and it was evident that it was very important the issue of migration was explored with our students. Of course, our role extends beyond exam studies, and we have a responsibility to support our students in developing the British values that make them confident and secure British citizens when they move into adult life.”
