The Year 11 House Debate competition was held this week, with students debating the contentious motion that ‘Britain is full and inward migration has to stop’ as part of the Focus Week on International Migrants’ Day.
Two school governors, Lyse Edwards and Greg Sugden, came in to judge the debate, along with school librarian, Helena Cresswell. The judges were very impressed with the research, counter-arguing and personal accounts delivered in the debates.
Despite all teams delivering a high standard of debating skills, Seward House yet again claimed the victory, with their winning team of Archie Stothart, Alex Meredith, William Roseblade and Oliver Ratchford-Smith, and a total score of 83 points. The teams from Darwin and Johnson House came joint second with 70 points, and Garrick came in third place with 60 points.
Despite Seward House being the winning team, the judges chose Cassidy Jackson (Darwin) and Lauren Thacker (Johnson) as their Most Valuable Debaters. They also wanted to give a special mention to Alex Meredith (Seward) and Rosie Walker (Johnson) for their debating skills.
Helena Cresswell, School Librarian, said, “Well done to all the students who took part in the debates. It was great to witness such passionate debating from so many of the students.”
Sam Sullivan, Assistant Headteacher, added: “The Year 10 debate is coming up next term, and the big question is, can any team beat Seward House?”
