As part of our Focus Week programme, and our ‘Who Are We’ theme where we look at the different experiences of our fellow Friary students, we celebrated International Day of Persons with Disabilities in school.

The week saw special assemblies tutor time activities, a school ‘raising awareness of others’ video, and activities including seated volleyball and sight affected tasks.

The week was tied around our Thought for the Week of: “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.”
Christopher Reeve, (1952-2004), US actor, director and activist.

There was also an emphasis on making sure we reflect on the disabilities we can see, and those that we cannot.

Matt Allman, Headteacher, said: “We want our students to think about what other students and staff have going on in their lives which may not be immediately visible. By looking first to patience, rather than anger or frustration, we can normally find an easier and less stressful solution to most of life’s challenges.”
