Year 10 Engineering students got the opportunity to visit IPL Plastics in Tamworth – the very company which manufactures the majority of chairs our students sit on during their school day!

The visit started with the students having a presentation which included information on oil extraction, plastic production, the injection moulding process and very importantly health and safety.

Following on from the presentation, students got a tour around the factory and got to see first-hand the machines which were in the process of manufacturing our most recent chair order.

After their tour they each tried their hand at quality control by identifying possible imperfections in a sample of chairs.

Alison Cartwright, Head of Design / Technology & Art, said: “IPL were incredibly welcoming and provided a great insight into the whole production process of the plastic products which they manufacture, with the fun fact of the day being that one of our chairs takes only 55 seconds to form. This practical experience enables our students to apply another school learning to a real-life context and will only support them in their future studies.”
