Our Sixth Form Open Evening was exceptionally busy and provided the opportunity for students and parents to discuss routes, options and opportunities both in terms of for our Sixth Form in September 2025 but much more widely than that.
The evening began with a Headteacher presentation mapping out how we operate, what we offer which differs to other settings, and impressed upon key message including a balance of choices and the urgency to at least apply early (as things do partly come down to a first-come-first-serve’ basis).
Following this, students had the chance to talk to all of their potential subject choices to determine what the courses entail and whether they had the capacity to succeed in the discipline. All subject areas also has Student Ambassadors who could give an accurate description of the courses from a student perspective.
Unlike many other such events, we also invited a range of community partners in. Our evening is not a direct ‘bums-on-seats’ recruitment drive, for us it is more important that students make the right decision for them. Consequently, we have representatives from local employers and employment organisations (including Balfour Beatty and the Engineering Development Trust), Ask Apprenticeships, Lichfield FC Football Programme, South Staffs College, and the University of Staffordshire.
Helen Barratt, Assistant Headteacher and Sixth Form Lead, said: “We well understand that this is a big decision for our students and we want to ensure they are aware of all potential routes, rather than simply hook students in and onto courses which may not be ideal for them. By providing a broad event, we can support students in making a fully informed choice which sets them up in a positive direction for the next phase of their journey.”
