The Friary U15 girls in their latest matchup against King Edwards, as the team delivered an outstanding performance right from the first whistle. The team was focused and determined, taking on board every piece of pre-match feedback by applying relentless pressure on the opposition. Their strong start set the tone for a thrilling game, showcasing impressive teamwork, skill, and resilience.
Esme Morris (Y8) shone in central midfield, battling fiercely to keep control of the game’s pace, with crucial support from Rainie Wong (Y9), who matched her energy and commitment. Despite Friary’s strong defence, King Edwards managed to break through midway through the first half, sneaking a goal past Friary’s keeper, Ava Sumpter. However, Friary was undeterred and fired up to even the score before the half-time whistle. They rallied brilliantly, and with sharp passing and well-executed teamwork between Esme Morris and Isabel Bridges, Bridges delivered a stunning reverse stick shot to equalize just before the break.
Following the half-time break, the Friary team returned to the pitch with renewed energy. Although King Edwards found the net first in the second half, Friary quickly responded. The team pushed hard in the attacking D, and Carys Lau (Y9) capitalized on a moment of chaos, directing the ball off a defender’s foot and into the goal to level the score once again to bring the score to 2-2.
In the closing minutes, Olivia Eggington (Y9) was a defensive powerhouse, repeatedly intercepting plays and preventing King Edwards from adding to their tally. Her contributions at the back were vital in securing the team’s position, earning her the Player of the Match award by a wide margin.
Kim Fallows, team coach, said: “This was a memorable game from a team playing together for the first time, with excellent performances all around, including a fantastic debut from Sasha Chambers. The experience brought lot of joy and pride to the team.”
