In an exhilarating showdown, Friary U18 Mixed had to settle for a hard-fought draw against King Edwards, following a disappointing loss in their previous encounter. The match was a testament to both teams’ determination and skill, but Friary showed resilience and spirit throughout.
From the push back, Friary came out strong, applying relentless pressure on their opponents. Their efforts paid off by half-time when Josh Douglas-Boisson delivered a stunning strike from inside the edge of the D, giving Friary a 1-0 lead. The goal showcased both power and precision, leaving the King Edwards keeper with no chance.
A special mention must go to goalkeeper Noah Bowers, who’s outstanding save just before the half-time whistle kept King Edwards at bay. Bowers made a remarkable diving save to the bottom right corner, ensuring Friary maintained their slim lead going into the break.
It was also encouraging to see Poppy Grimshaw back in the squad, adding depth to the team, while Captain Will Whyte provided valuable positive and constructive feedback, rallying the players as they headed into the second half.
However, the tide turned after the break, with King Edwards dominating possession and creating numerous chances. Bowers continued to shine, denying several attempts, but the pressure finally told when a short corner awarded to King Edwards resulted in their equalizer, making it 1-1.
Despite the setback, Friary responded with determination and quickly regained the lead. Yet, with just three minutes remaining, misfortune struck. A deflected ball hit defender Polly Whitworth in the circle, leading to another short corner for King Edwards. They capitalized on this opportunity, firing home with ease to level the score at 2-2.
Kim Fallows, team coach, said: “As the final whistle blew, both teams could take pride in their performances. Friary U18 Mixed now shifts focus to their upcoming fixture against Cathedral School, eager to build on this draw and return to winning ways.”
