Our last round in the House Debating Competition saw the Year 7s turn to be involved in the House Debate Competition. Teams from all Houses debated the notion, “Britain is no longer a world power due to cuts in its armed forces” as part of our Focus Week on National Armed Forces Day.

The debates were judged by School Librarian Helena Cresswell, and School Governors Gillian Findlay and Lyse Edwards, who were all very impressed by the preparation and research undertaken by the students. There was a good deal of independent research as well as use of visual aids such as graphs to highlight key points.

After much discussion, the judges chose the team from Seward House as the debate winners with their team of Jack Stainforth, Annabelle Hill and Hannah Brown. Joshua Thurlby (Johnson) and Caleb Cheung (Garrick) were awarded most valuable debaters, and the judges also wanted to give special mention to Leo Archer (Garrick) and Louis Martin (Darwin) who showed some great flair for debating.

Helena Cresswell, School Librarian, said, “The students presented their cases very well and spoke with great confidence and passion. It was a close call, but the Seward team definitely had the edge in the end. Well done to everyone who took part.”
