Year 8 students were treated this week to a visit from Will Clough, Academy Coach at Burton Albion Football Club, about how languages are used in sport.

Will, who has been involved with the Academy set up at Burton Albion for several years, studied French and Spanish at university and uses his languages on a daily basis with players and staff at the club. Will’s family has a long and illustrious history in football with clubs such as Nottingham Forest, Derby County, Burton Albion and Mansfield Town.

During the course of the talk, Will shared his personal experiences of using languages in his work and also spoke to students about the wide range of careers that are available, and which use foreign languages in some format.

Commenting on the visit, Charlie Simpson, Head of Languages said: “It was a pleasure to welcome Will to the Friary again and I know how grateful students were for an insight into how modern foreign languages are used in sport. It really helps students to hear from people in the world of work who use languages on a daily basis, and helps them to understand the relevance of their language studies to their future. I’d like to thank Will for visiting and we look forward to welcoming him again in the future.”
