After school on Friday, 50 pupils travel to Loughborough to watch Super League Netball.

This time Loughborough Lightening were facing tough rivals Maverick Saracens in Round 10. This year we had the added bonus of a personal link to Lightening’s Beth Cobden, who trained in our PE department earlier this year, and she was warming up on court, playing for Loughborough.

After re-fuelling, visiting the merchandise stall and having a few shots with a netball, it was game time.

The first half saw Loughborough holding onto the lead, but Saracens weren’t giving up without a fight and kept clawing back. By the final quarter, Loughborough were winning and just needed to stay goal for goal to take the win. What a last quarter it was with the relentless feeds into Mary Cholhok time after time resulting in Loughborough winning 68-60.

Following the game, the players stayed on court for a debrief and we managed to catch Beth Cobden’s attention, who kindly headed towards the girls and signed autographs and took pictures. Beth kindly invited the girls onto the court for a picture, which was a fantastic experience. The girls continued to wait patiently and got autographs and pictures with most of the Loughborough team. On the return to the coach, the girls showed off their selfies and autographs and continued to chatter all the way home. Memories which will last a lifetime, fantastic time had by all.

Matt Allman, Headteacher, said “We have had a big push on girls sports this year and it has paid off massively with a popular subject getting more popular still. Huge thanks to the staff who gave up more personal time to run this superb trip. We recognise that going the extra mile makes a massive difference.”
