On the day of Y10 parents evening, our year 10 boys were busy making the school and themselves proud by booking their place in the Cannock & District Cup Final by beating Cardinal Griffin 4-2.

They started bright scoring after 2 minutes through George Burgess, after some great pressure on Cardinal Griffin’s defence. A very close game saw both teams pushing to score in tough windy, rainy conditions and a well worked goal saw us get pegged back to 1-1.

However, Archie Clark added a second for Y10 – after their defence didn’t clear a corner and Archie was there to strike the ball home. Once more though, Cardinal Griffin had some great attacks towards the end of the half and by half-time the score was 2-2.

The second half was dominated by our Y10 boys – pressing high and putting constant pressure on their defence and midfield. Lewis Snowden worked hard all game and got his reward when being brought down to earn a penalty for The Friary School. Captain, Harley Carson stepped up and made no mistake from the spot, 3-2.

There was still time for George Burgess to score the goal of the game with an excellent turn and finish on the edge of the box which sent us through to the cup final.

Jamie Sleigh, team coach, said: “It was a tough choice for Man of the Match – well done to all involved – but Dan Hood was calm and composed on the ball throughout the game in defence. Similarly, Rutendo Mutezo down the left side was also comfortable throughout and both deserve the recognition for two great performances. Next half term will see Year 7 and 9 have their semi final games – it would be great to see multiple Friary representatives in cup finals this year.”
