As we already look toward the new 2023-2024 academic year, we wanted to draw your attention to the plans the French Department to maintain the excellent progress rates and exam results the subject area achieves with our students.

Our GCSE French course is an integral part of the EBacc suite of qualifications which the Department for Education believe is a key element for broad options for further study and future careers.

The EBacc is not a qualification or a certificate, but it does mean a child has achieved GCSEs in English, Maths, Science, History or Geography and a Foreign Language (so with us French).

We regularly see almost two-thirds of our children get this benchmark which is significantly above the national averages. We do not insist on it for all students – more important to us is a curriculum that supports the skills and abilities of each and every student – but it remains an important part of our offer.

For September 2023, the French Department will be offering:

Year 7-9 Foreign Languages and Culture Club

We would encourage your child to attend this extra-curricular club to learn more about languages and culture from around the world, through games, music and first-hand experience from some of our brilliant students we have at the Friary who speak English as an Additional Language.

Kerboodle

Your child can access Kerboodle which allows them to interact with the electronic version of the textbooks that we work from in lessons.

Memrise

Your child can access Memrise which is a vocabulary learning website. They need to join their Year group (instructions available on Satchelone) and practice the vocabulary that we have covered in class through the use of Memrise’s electronic flashcards.

Linguascope

Your child can access Linguascope which is, a website with language learning games. Students can play games and activities in French on the topics that they have learnt about in class.

Charlotte Wilkinson, Teacher of French and Foreign Languages and Culture Club Coordinator said: “As a department, we would like to thank you all for your support during the last academic year and we look forward to welcoming your child back to school in September. We are as keen as ever to help your child shine in French and this package of support in school and at home can make a huge difference for each and every child.”
