Our final round of our KS3 (Years 7-9) Independent Learning Quiz was based on the life of Mary Seacole as a British Heroine. The competition sees students given a set top to research in advance of our Focus Week and then battle commences on the school library.

There were 10 gruelling questions that required through research – how many could you have answered:

  5. What happened in 2004? Mary was voted the Greatest Black Briton.

  7. What was the first name of Mary’s husband? Edwin
  8. What was the main disease that Mary helped cure in her time in Panama? Tuberculosis, Cholera or Typhoid? Cholera
  9. What was Mary’s nickname given by the soldiers? Mother Seacole
  10. A statue of Mary Seacole is in the grounds of which London hospital? St Thomas’s, St Bartholomew’s or St Leonard’s? St Thomas’s

Tiebreaker: Seacole was buried in London. According to the Air Miles Calculator website how far is London from Panama?

Each of the Houses sent in two teams and the top three were:

 1st Place: 8J1 (Johnson House) with 10 points – Francesca Albertazzi, Luke Aldridge and William Lester-Jones

Joint 2nd Place: 9S1 (Seward House) with 8 points – Charlie Parks, Archie Stothart and Isobel Brazendale

Joint 2nd Place: 7S1 (Seward House) with 8 points – Maisie Botfield, Abigail Payne and Noah Bowers

Every student who took part was awarded 20 House Points and the totals were added to the early rounds with the winning House to be announced in the end of term Celebration Assemblies.

Sam Sullivan, Assistant Headteacher, said: “We are keen to encourage our younger students to explore and investigate topics so that they are well prepared for their GCSE and above studies. The House competitive element is always a motivation and the winning team’s 100% record was very impressive. No team let themselves down and we’re excited to see the reveal on the winning House later in the term.”
