Wizz is a networking app which allows users to connect and chat. It works very similar way to a dating app. Every user shares personal information and can be contacted by literally anyone. In itself it may not sound like no problem but there are serious issues to be aware of.

Wizz does use a digital ID system but is only detects approximates ages and so older people can contact younger ones very easily. Equally the profile pictures on Wizz do not have to match the face of the person who has signed it. This means there is a real risk of grooming and exploitation.

Also, research has found that Wizz conversations can quickly tuns to a sexual nature – in terms of messages and swapping nude or semi-nude pictures. These can all run like Snapchat and disappear if a feature is turned on but with screenshots once it goes out it can be saved and then distributed elsewhere.

There is an advice leaflet for parents which can be accessed here.

Stacey Walsh, Assistant Headteacher, said: “Online safety is a moveable feast – things change rapidly and it is tough for anyone to keep up with the new apps and features that arise on a daily basis. Wizz is rising to prominence and it is important that our work in school is complemented by conversations at home that warning of the risks. Online life can be a positive experience but it is important to go into it with eyes wide open and attuned to the dangers that can crop up.”
