The Friary School Ski Team kick off the 2023 season with success in the  English Schools National Indoor Ski Championships.

Three familiar faces and one new face travelled to The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead to compete against senior schools from across England in the English Schools National Indoor Ski Championships 2023.

Sean Whillis (Y10), Finn Pike (Y8) and Reece Pike (Y10), were joined by new team member, Izaak Bailey (Y10), racing in his first competitive slalom race, and he did the team proud. Indeed, the team gained 2nd place in these national finals.

Bringing home the silverware were Reece Pike who was second in the U16s and Finn Pike who was 4th in the U14s.

Russ Pike, ski team manager, said: “It is more about the comradery than the medals and to see the four lads helping one another with course inspections and cheering each other on, was priceless. The podium places and medals were great too but the accompanying chocolate bars were the most prized award in what became a spirited journey home in the team bus.”

Matt Allman, Headteacher, added: “We are always keen to offer every student the school name, and help with paperwork, to get them into national finals as the diverse range of sports our students do mean we cannot attend every event. In this case, the contribution of Russ Pike (parent) in running the team and putting in the hard yards is incredible and we are just holding onto the coat-tails of him and the boys as they go from success to success.”

The next event is in June in Manchester, and training continues every week at Swadlincote. Anyone interested male or female any age, please email Russ at info@adventuruss.co.uk or speak to Mr Sleigh via office@friary.greywoodmst.co.uk
