The Easter Term saw three more rounds of our House Debating Competition role through and the battle for the annual trophy is heading towards a final conclusion up with just one round to go.

Earlier this term, our Year 10 students tackled the debate of ‘Religion causes more conflict that it solves…’ as part of our Focus Week on World Religion Day.

Following this, our Year 9 students focused their debating energies on ‘British society is tolerant and respectful to all people…’ as part of our Focus Week on the US ‘Respect For All Week’.

Most recently, our Year 8s took centre stage during our Focus Week on International Women’s Day by debating ‘Men are the weaker sex…’

The common them in these debates was the absolute dominance of Seward House who came to each debate well-prepared and ready to argue their points with coherence, detail and gusto.

Consequently, Seward House lead by some way and he current scores see:

Seward House – 396 points
Garrick House – 354 points
Darwin House – 342 points
Johnson House – 341 points

The Summer Term sees just one more round remaining where during our Focus Week on Refugee Week our Years 7 will debate the topic of ‘It is our moral responsibility to welcome refugees into the country…’

Sam Sullivan, Assistant Headteacher, said: “We think the skill of debating is a crucial one for later life and this House competition see each round judged by school governors and Greywood Trustees who are always impressed by the high standards of argument, research and passion demonstrated by our students. These younger students go on to represent the school in regional debating competitions too so there is a real sense of progression and pride.”
