Our Focus Week on British Heroes took in the British literary icon, Charles Dickens, and celebrated the literary and philanthropic contribution he made to national life.
Activities included tutor time tasks exploring the relevance of his work in a modern setting, an assembly looking into Dickens’ background and the significance of background within our own lives, a KS3 house competition on key Dickensian facts and a transformation of the English corridor into scenes from A Christmas Carol.
The English theme week also saw Friary teachers, including those from outside the English department, taking to the school’s Instagram to share and perform their favourite poetry.
Finally, our school welcomed the Scholastic Book Fair to give students the opportunity to purchase over 200 titles spanning all genres in school. The Book Fair was based in the library but also made an appearance alongside the Battle of the Bands, with many parents coming into school with their children to purchase books. The Book Fair sold over an incredible £650 worth of books in five days, with a percentage of that going to the school to purchase brand new books ourselves. A sincere thank you for your support.
Simon Daniels, Head of English, said: “To celebrate an iconic part of our literary heritage has been a joy and it’s been fascinating to see so many students ask about the life of Dickens and his famous works. We were extremely excited to welcome the Scholastic Book Fair to our school and the response has been simply incredible; a sincere and heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported it.”
