Our House Debating Competition runs through the school year and sees each Year group represent their House in a debate against rival Houses on a topic associated with the particular Focus Week.

The most recent debate saw Year 9 students debate in front of Governors And Trustees on the theme of ‘Respect For All Week’ on the issue of: ‘British society is tolerant and respectful to all people…’.

There are two rounds of debating left where the following topics will be debated:

Year 8 – ‘International Women’s Day’ Focus Week – ‘Men are the weaker sex…’

Year 7 – ‘Refugee Week’ Focus Week – ‘It is our moral responsibility to welcome refugees into the country…’

The current standings show a tight battle with all Houses in with a shout of taking the annual trophy:

1. Seward House – 331 points
2. Garrick House – 302 points
3. Johnson House – 294 points
4. Darwin House – 291 points

Sam Sullivan, Assistant Headteacher, said: “The quality of the debates has been excellent and we are sharing the highlights with all students so that they can learn from one another how to construct coherent and well evidenced arguments. The skill of debating arguing without falling out – is an important one for later life and we are delighted there is so much talent in our school. With just two rounds to go any House could win – it is going to be very exciting.”
