World Religion Day was the topic of our recent Focus Week and this saw students engaging in a range of activities which acknowledged the role and status of world religions in influencing the world around us. The debate title was: ‘Religion causes more conflict than it solves.’
For the House Debating Competition, our Year 10 students grappled with the contentious issues of religion and conflict, verbally thrashing out their arguments before judges, School Librarian Helena Cresswell, School Governor Lyse Edwards, and Chair of Governors Jane Mackenzie.
Although it was a tough contest, the judges agreed that the team representing Seward House presented the most compelling arguments, and delivered their case persuasively with excellent research to support their ideas. Congratulations to Harry Compton, Joshua Douglas-Boisson, Gareth Hunt and Harry Battams for a superb effort.
The Most Valuable Debaters chosen by the external judges were Phoenix Ivey (Johnson House) and Josh Douglas-Boisson (Seward House).
Jamie Sleigh, Head of Seward House, said: “I am absolutely thrilled with the performance of the Seward House team. The boys worked hard on their arguments and it’s clear their efforts have paid off.”
Sam Sullivan, Assistant Headteacher, added: “The Debate Competition scoreboard looks quite different now with Seward House moving into the lead, closely followed by Garrick House. Without doubt, Mr Cartner will be prepping his Year 9 teams in advance, with the aim of surpassing Seward next time.”
