‘The Friary Pen’ is a new initiative that looks to inspire and teach industry skills to students with aspirations in writing, publishing, editing, and design.
There is a weekly workshop schedule with a new focus each week offering students the chance to learn skills for different writing styles or learn more about working within these industries.
These are drop-in sessions that are open to all students from Year 9+ (students in Year 7 and 8 are welcome to attend but may find some of the work more challenging – please talk to Mrs Wright for more information).
There is no need to sign up or commit to every week and we welcome suggestions for any areas that interest students that we have not yet covered.
Alongside this, there will be the collation, editing, and publication of a termly e-zine (an artistic magazine which collates a mixture of written styles and artistic work).
Submissions for this will be advertised separately and all students are welcome to submit work.
Students do not need to attend the workshops to submit work, and all work published will be examples of extra curricular writing.
Each termly zine will focus on a new topic/theme to inspire a wide range of creative writing, transactional writing, and artwork.
Abi Wright, English teacher and organiser, said “The first issue will centre around the idea of place – submissions will open on Wednesday 11 January for this first issue and it will be published online in the last week of this half term.
