As part of supporting all of our students in getting their GCSE grade 4+ in GCSE Maths we have introduced a pre-cursor exam to support progress, boost confidence and provide a step-up to the final exams at the end of Year 11.
We follow the Edexcel Entry Level GCSE Maths Certificate course – which marries well with the GCSE course we run – and the formal assessment takes place in February 2023.
The first Mock exam brought excellent results with 11/16 showing they we well on track to gain the qualification first time: Jack Barnes, Callum Doyle, Oliver Heaton, Cameron Ashmore, Tyler Buet, Jason Burgwin, Eryn Moore, Alexis Reed-Macbeth, Oscar Singpradang and Grace Stringer.
The other 5 were not a million miles away and they are going to be there or thereabouts come the formal exam.
Hannah Stewart, Maths teacher and course leader, said: “We were incredibly proud of each of the students for giving this a go – it was very much a trial run – and we were delighted with how well they all tackled the assessments. Each of the students have proven they can succeed in Maths and we look forward to making further progress when we hit the real thing in February.”
Charlotte Mitchell, Head of Maths said: “A key factor in getting a Grade 4 in GCSE Maths is confidence. It is no secret that some students find Maths tough, and can let their heads drop, but this sort of success promotes an ‘I can’ attitude which will hold the student in great stead for the formal GCSE exam. There is always a lot to be said for success building on success and that is what we are seeking to work with here.”
