This week we received confirmation that we are a ‘Dyslexia Friendly’ school. The British Dyslexia Association “Dyslexia Friendly” Quality Mark provides a framework for schools to improve their understanding of dyslexia and to develop the strategies we put in place to support the achievement and engagement of dyslexic learners. The BDA Dyslexia Friendly Quality Mark is an external sign of approval that is widely recognised not only in the UK but also internationally.
We have been working towards the award for over two years, ensuring that teachers and students understand the ways in which we can support learners with dyslexia or dyslexic traits. Often, the strategies used are beneficial to all learners and help everyone to achieve their best.
During our external assessment the assessor visited lessons, spoke to students as well as meet with staff and parents. Throughout the day evidence was gathered that showed how we support learners in and out of lessons.
In the final report the BDA assessor said: “The Friary School has a caring and sensitive ethos, where SEND provision is a key priority for the school. It has a specific dyslexia policy which outlines the school’s commitment to supporting those with dyslexia/dyslexic tendencies. ‘The Friary Ethic’ is the basis of the values system that runs across the school and revolves around enabling ALL pupils to succeed.”
Lottie Hearn, Deputy Headteacher and SENCO, said: “We are delighted to have gained this quality mark from the British Dyslexia Association. The external assessor was very impressed with our students and staff and the work that we do to support learners. She visits many secondary schools as part of her work so it was good to hear such positive comments following her visit. As well as praising the work we do she also gave us some ideas to help us continue our work for students with dyslexia into the future.”
