  • There is a small shop on site with a small amount of snacks and souvenirs

Emergency Contact

The following telephone numbers are for emergency use only.

Please thing carefully what you tell your child when they are away on a school trip and encourage your child to take any concerns to staff at Edale rather than calling you up.

Previous emergency calls have involved children not liking the evening meal or not being able to site next to who they would prefer – these are not emergencies.

  • YHA Edale – 0345 371 9514
  • Mrs Freeman (at Edale) – 07498 218 440
  • Mrs Sullivan (*at school) – 01543 267400 (school hours) / 07931 091 926 (out-of-school hours)

Items to Bring

Naturally, all specialist clothing and equipment is provided by the YHA Centre but it is worth bearing in mind that there is a strong possibility that participants will get wet and muddy during their stay. Consequently, new and expensive items of clothing are best left at home.

  • Torch & spare battery
  • A refillable NAMED water bottle
  • Money – no more than £20 (there is a small tuck shop – nothing else)
  • Adapter plugs / chargers (including portable chargers)
  • Any medication your child needs (sufficient for the trip)
  • Something to read / play (for coach)
  • Sun cream
  • Several old T-shirts
  • 2 or 3 pairs of old trousers or tracksuit
  • 2 or 3 jumpers or warm tops (fleece is ideal)
  • A waterproof coat with hood and waterproof trousers.
  • 1 pair of old trainers for use on wet / muddy activities
  • 1 pair of shoes/trainers for use in the centre
  • Several pairs of socks, including 1 thick pair if you have them
  • Several changes of underwear
  • Pyjamas
  • 1 slightly smarter set of clothes for meals and wearing in the centre
  • Wash kit and 2 towels (1 for muddy activities and 1 for washing)
  • Plastic bags / black bin liners for dirty washing
  • Food and drink for Friday lunch.

Mobile Phones, Etc

Neither the school nor YHA will take any responsibility for mobile phones, tablets, etc. The responsibility rests solely with your child. Outdoor activities are the ideal place to break or lose expensive technology.

There is minimal mobile phone signal at YHA Edale but there is a payphone onsite, as well as a landline for emergency use.

Handy Hints

  • Life is often about giving new things a go – so give them a go.
  • If you only like the food made at home then remember you are not home – get stuck in.
  • If you meet new people – talk to them, be upbeat, and be positive.
  • When the going gets tough – get on with it – no moaning.
  • Some of the activities come with an element of risk so listen carefully and follow instructions.
  • Friary staff are giving up their weekend to give you a new experience – help yourself by helping them to help you.

Finally, we are running this trip because we are keen to give your child the chance to try new things, have fun and forge new friendships before they go into their GCSE years. We want them to have a great time.

Please encourage your child to throw themselves into everything, to take things on with good heart and a cheery demeanour, and most of all to take on the lion’s share of the responsibility for their own fun and happiness.

Many of us can remember our own school residentials from years ago really clearly. This is your child’s chance to build similar memories.

Matt Allman, Headteacher, added: “We hope all the parents enjoy their well-deserved weekend off. Just don’t have such a good time that you forget to pick them up at 4.00pm(ish) on Sunday.”
