In a hard and closely fought contest the Y9 Friary cricket team narrowly defeated King Edwards in their 16 over match.
King Edwards won the toss and chose to bat and the Friary bowlers produced some great bowling to restrict them to 85/8. The bowling unit was strong across the board: Sean Whillis 3/20, Jono George 2/3, Charlie Saunders 2/9 and Krish Sukhadia 1/12.
In reply, King Edwards bowled strongly but an outstanding 51 run partnership between Ollie Foley (11) and Luan Painter (51*) put Friary in a great position. Reece Pike (5*) came in to finish the game in supporting the required 10 runs off the final two overs. Captain Luan Painter starred again with the bat and strongly hit two 4’s to secure the win.
Jono George was given Man of the Match after coming on in the middle overs when King Edwards were striking out and restricting them in his 3 overs with 1 maiden and 2 wickets for only 3 runs.
Jamie Sleigh, PE teacher and team coach, said: “The team have trained hard in the nets through the summer term and the signs in lunch practise today were very positive. Even so, it was fantastic to see the team perform so well against strong opposition and the entire team were thrilled with how they played.”
