The Friary students in Years 7-10 took part in an eagerly anticipated Cannock and District Swimming Gala and there were some excellent performances.

We made a fantastic start coming first in the Year 8 girls front crawl relay. This continued with the girls coming in the top 4 of all their races. Poppy O’Sullivan was the star of the Year 7 show coming first in both the fly and breast stroke. Olivia Hann, Amelia Stothert, Poppy Grimshaw and Amelia Hurst were all fantastic role models to the younger year groups helping organise them whilst also showing them some outstanding strokes.

Moving onto the boys, the Year 7 and 8 students put in a valiant effort ensuring that every race had a representative from the Friary. Indeed, we were one of the only schools to manage this in the competition and this also led to the boys trying out different strokes which shows brilliant courage.

Lewis Dickenson was the star of the show for the Year 9 and 10 students coming first in the 50m fly.

Finally, both the boys and the girls, came in the Top 3 in the final events of the day, the cannon.

Sam Foster, Head of Performance & Technologies, said: “The gala shows The Friary has a strong stable of swimmers across the Year groups and they did themselves proud. Both the individual successes and the willingness of others to compete for the first time were outstanding. Well done to the whole Friary team.”
