Our Year 7 geographers were out around the school collecting georeferenced data as part of developing the subject skills to take them into GCSE and beyond.

The groups were first tasked with creating a survey about the quality of the school environment. This would be used to select their data and to direct the focus of their analysis. They then used an app on their phones (ArcGIS Survey123) to scan the QR code on the board which downloaded the survey.

They went out to collect location / photos / data to respond to their survey before returning to classrooms and to map the results in ArcGIS.

Helen Young, Geography teacher, said: “This is industry-level GIS software and so is great for them to be using. The software is now provided free to schools and we can create as many log ins as I like. We’ll be using it with the Year 12s next week to show them how they could use it for their NEA projects so getting Year 7s on board now is a real boost in terms of long-term progression.”
