Each year the Hospitality & Catering teachers sign up to a range of initiatives to give the pupils an experience of foods they may not have prepared, cooked, and enjoyed, for example in 2019 we were lucky enough to successful apply for free game for schools.

This year there was the opportunity to apply for free mussels for schools through ‘The Food Teachers Centre FISH Hero Programme’ and we were lucky enough to be one of the 200 schools across the nation to be selected to receive these this week.

The mussels are currently relaxing in a UV seawater jacuzzi bath waiting to be packed at 4.00am tomorrow morning. The will then a life to Plymouth to be handed over to M&J Seafood and will then be chauffeur driven to Bicester, then onwards to Smethwick, Farnham and Wigan whilst safely stored in temperature controlled vans. Early Tuesday and Wednesday morning a chosen few will be driven to schools across the UK to play their part in this seafood initiative.

Our students will be learning how to handle, prepare, and cook their mussels on Thursday 2 November.

Matt Allman, Headteacher, said: “I am partial to moules and frites when on holiday and so it is likely I’ll be conducting a learning walk that takes in the end of the lesson. Our DT staff are fantastic and getting on board with these schemes and broadening the curriculum diet of our students so it is no surprise they have struck gold here. It will be great to see our students try something new and it is these sort of experiences which spark a career or passion that can run for a lifetime.”
