Our Dementia Awareness Focus Week saw our Health & Social Care Department take centre stage with their close links with the local care home and the community and they decided to run a penpal letter competition.
In light of those who suffer with dementia at the Spires Care Home in Lichfield, students appreciate how difficult this last year has been during the pandemic and the loss of not being able to see loved ones. Consequently, the H&SC team set up a competition where all could enter to try and cheer up a care home resident.
The competition saw students write letters to care home residents about their lives and aspirations, as well as to express their thoughts for those living a different life during these COVID times.
The penpal letters are due to go to the Spires Care Home on Wednesday 19 May so watch this space for your reply.
Kim Fallows, Head of Health & Social Care, said: “I can’t believe how many wonderful entries we received and it was so difficult choosing just twenty winners , but I thank everyone for their entries and efforts and I know the residents will absolutely love your letters’.
All of the entries deserve huge praise but the top three were: (1) Leigha Hearn (Y7), (2) Eliza Grotane (Y8), (3) Mary Hughes (Y10).
