As part of our Equality Week, Year 11 students took on the topic of ‘Gender Equality’ – a very hot topic in the #MeToo climate –  in the most recent House Debating Competition and excelled with what was a difficult but extremely relevant competition.

A range of points were made from the gender pay gap, which has been in the news, to prominent women in History and the centenary of the Representation of the People Act, which gave women the right to vote for the first time.

Poppy Phelps and Tom Hughes gave stand out performances due to their ability to listen and respond to points that challenged their side, they were very adept at dealing with often challenging points made by the opposing House.

Jason Cain, Assistant Headteacher, said: “We love to set our students a real challenge in these debates by giving them the toughest topics so it was wonderful to see the high quality of debate and arguments / counter-arguments throughout the competition.”
