Vision and Values

I am delighted and deeply honoured to write as Headteacher of The Friary School. Having previously served as a senior leader here between 2017 and 2021, this school is very special to me. It was a great privilege to return in January 2026 and once again work alongside The Friary’s talented and dedicated staff, our wonderful students, and our supportive wider community.

The Friary School is built on a well-established ethos: a commitment to ensuring that every student is safe, happy and successful. This is reflected in our mission statement: “High achievement through challenge and support for every learner.” Everything we do is guided by this idea.

Supporting young people as they learn and grow is both a privilege and a great responsibility. We recognise that this can only be achieved through a strong partnership between school, home and our wider community, and we value the support of all who share in this earnest endeavour.

We are passionate about providing students with a rich and varied educational experience. Alongside academic learning, we offer a wide range of opportunities for young people to develop their interests, talents and character. Whether through clubs, sports teams, educational visits, musical performance, leadership opportunities or enrichment activities, our students are encouraged to discover new passions, build friendships and develop the skills they need for the future.

We are fortunate to have an experienced, talented and hardworking staff who are committed to helping every child achieve their potential. Equally important is the role of our families. Regular attendance, hard work, kindness towards others and a willingness to embrace new experiences are vital ingredients in helping young people make the most of the opportunities available to them.

At The Friary School, we have high expectations and a strong commitment to academic excellence. We recognise that qualifications continue to open doors and create opportunities for the future. At the same time, we celebrate achievement in all its forms. Success may be found in the performing arts, on the sports field, through leadership, charitable work, service to others, or the many experiences that take place beyond the classroom.

We believe that achievement in one area often inspires confidence and success in another. For this reason, we take great pride in recognising and celebrating the many accomplishments of our students, wherever their talents may lie.

We are a school that combines high expectations with empathy. We challenge every young person to achieve their best, while providing the support they need to overcome obstacles, grow in confidence and succeed.

We believe that clear boundaries, consistent standards and a calm learning environment help students thrive. At the same time, we recognise the importance of creativity, enjoyment and opportunity. School life should be challenging, but rewarding and with a sense of fun, too.

These are the values that define The Friary School. If they reflect your own aspirations, we would be delighted to welcome you into our community.
