Year 12s Debate Role of Patriotism

Our House Debating competition continued this week with teams from Year 12 debating the motion ‘Patriotism is an important part of Remembrance Day,’ as of our Remembrance Focus Week. The students had researched their arguments well, drawing on evidence from history, as well as more contemporary references. All teams performed well, but in the end, Johnson House were the clear winners - with a huge 97 points overall. Darwin House came second with 91 points, Seward came third with 81 points and Garrick came fourth with 75 points.

The teams were:

Johnson House: Madison B, Sophie L, Corey L and Will C.

Darwin House: Oliver S, Sam D, Bogdan D and Emma B.

Seward House: Finley P, Olivia D and Roxanna C.

Garrick House: Zia W, Lily W, Thomas C and Ellie V.

Although the team from Johnson House won the overall total, the judges were impressed by all teams and awarded the Most Valuable Debaters to Oliver S and Olivia D. We would like to thank our guest judges, school governors J. Mackenzie and A. Jackson, for their contributions.

Mrs Cresswell, school librarian and debate judge, said: “Well done to all the students who took part in the debates, they are a credit to us all and themselves. The debates were passionate and engaging.”
