Sixth Form kick off House Debates
Our House Debating Competition kicked off again this week, with our Year 13 students debating the notion ‘Social media platforms have a negative impact on young people’s understanding of relationships’ as part of our PSHE Sexual Health Week.
Well done to all the students who took part in the debates; it was great to see how engaged the teams were. Our guest judges, school governors Lyse Edwards and Andrew Jackson, were impressed by the students’ eloquence and impressive counter-arguing skills.
The standard was so high that the judges couldn’t single out one person as most valuable debater. In Tuesday’s debate, the Most Valuable Debaters were therefore Poppy PG (Darwin), Jonah B and Sasha C (Seward) as well as Rosie W (Johnson). In Wednesday’s debate, the most valuable debater was Freya M.
The overall debate results were:
1st Place: Johnson with 76 points (Stanley P, Charlie P, Rosie W and Freya M)
2nd Place: Seward with 62 points (William Barry, Sasha Chambers and Jonah B)
3rd Place: Garrick with 60 points (Cameron W, Oliver Band Tommy B
4th Place: Darwin with 50 points (Henry M, Rutendo M, Henry B and Poppy PG)
Judge and school librarian, Mrs Cresswell, said, “We were so impressed by the standard of preparation and debating skills. The Year 13s have certainly set the bar high for the rest of the competition!”
