National Year of Reading 2026
As part of the National Year of Reading 2026, the Department for Education is investing £5 million for secondary schools to purchase books to support reading enjoyment amongst pupils.
Our share of this as an individual school is relatively small - £1,400 - but is very welcome nonetheless. The Friary School holds this money on account at Browns Books, the DfE's chosen supplier. The school librarians, Mrs Cresswell and Mrs Burdett, have enlisted the help of pupils to make book suggestions and created our first order. A range of titles were selected based on the needs and interests of the pupils.
63 exciting new titles arrived in the school library this week – and we know pupils will be keen to read them.
