During the last week of term, eight Year 12 students – accompanied by Miss Simpson and Mr Simpson – embarked on five days of intensive sail training aboard Merrilyn, a 65‑foot yacht operated by the Rona Sailing Project. Despite challenging seas and bouts of sea sickness, every student demonstrated resilience, teamwork and determination, representing the school exceptionally well.
By Day 3, the group had developed strong sailing competence, impressing the Rona crew with their effort, positivity and willingness to learn. All eight students achieved the RYA Introduction to Yachting Qualification – an impressive accomplishment, as this award is not usually covered on the programme.
Six students also earned the prestigious Amery Award for exceptional effort, and three have been invited to return for further training over the next 12 months, with the opportunity to qualify as future Rona Project trainers.
The group sailed from Hamble to Cowes, Poole, Studland Bay, Yarmouth, and back again – even enjoying a celebratory swim in the sea.
Reflecting on the week, Miss Simpson, group leader, said: “Sailing itself is challenging but the project is about far more – teamwork, resilience and determination. It was a pleasure being on the trip and watching the students make such great progress in a short space of time. They were a credit to the school.”
