The Friary School has been awarded the highest tier of award, the Platinum Award, from the Staffordshire & Stoke-on-Trent Music Education Hub.
The award saw the school tested against stiff criteria and only two schools across the county achieved the highest honour.
The wide range of instruments offered, the expert teaching and the numerous musical events mark the school out as outstanding.
Students perform at a events throughout the year ranging from international concert tours to ‘Encore’ shows and Cathedral Concerts to corporate events.
The school is increasingly relying on the support of the PTA in maintaining our Music provision in the face of budget cuts. The national picture for Music is not good – http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-39154242 – but with parent and community support we can still maintain the highest standards.
David Purkiss, Head of Music, said: “The award is testament to the talent of the students and staff who make Music provision so strong at our school. Equally, we know the family and PTA support is immense and this only adds to the high standard we all produce together.”
Matt Allman, Headteacher, added: “With many schools cutting their Music provision amidst nationally-led curriculum changes, we are resolutely retaining out commitment to the subject. Creativity is a crucial skill, performing breeds confidence, and team-work in performances is critical. Music offers skills for life, as well as providing a pursuit that rewards for life. We are very proud that our Music Department stands out and has earned the highest possible award.”
