The worldwide commemorations for the Holocaust have been seen across the news and there have been many events across the country to pay respect to those who lost their lives.
The Friary School is a Beacon School for the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education and takes the role of being a dynamic hub in delivering Holocaust teaching with confidence, proficiency and excellence.
This year The Friary has played its part my remembering Holocaust victims as individuals rather than simply the death statistics. We have focused on the individual names, the individual stories, the individual aspirations and the individual lives.
This has seen the creation of Remembrance wristbands, story-telling and information presentations around the school site.
Student have also signed remembrance stones to pledge to keep the memory of the Holocaust alive as stones do not die and show the permanence of memory. The Jewish faith encourages the laying of stones on graves as a sign of remembrance and respect. We produced one stone to represent 40,000 Holocaust victims and have added them to the Holocaust display in the school library.
Additionally, students attended a memorial service at Lichfield Cathedral and others engaged in a Holocaust lecture at the University of Wolverhampton.
